The Shakespeare Garden is a beautiful four-acre flower garden on a steep incline. It is around seven minutes’ walk from the West 77th Street footpath entrance to Central Park. It is named the Shakespeare Garden because all of the flowers in it are mentioned in Shakespeare's plays and poems.
The Shakespeare Garden is on a steep slope, going upwards from street level, climbing around half the height up to Belvedere Castle. To get to Belvedere Castle from the West side you would need to walk through the Shakespeare Garden, over a lawn and then up some steps.
The Shakespeare Garden has several paved pathways and lots of smaller gardens within. There is a rustic, rough-hewn wooden platform with wooden benches, which is nice spot for a ceremony with a group of fewer than ten people.
At the top of the Shakespeare Garden is a large semi-circular granite bench, which is known as the “Whisper Bench” because a whisper spoken into one end of the bench can be heard on the other side. This is also a nice spot for a ceremony. There is nowhere in the Shakespeare Garden suitable for a wedding ceremony with a roof in case of rain.
The Shakespeare Garden has lot of opportunities for very beautiful portrait pictures, with all the flowers, and it’s very close to the highest point in Central Park, Belvedere Castle, which is also a good spot for photos. The English flowers in the garden are at their best during the Spring and Summer. It’s gorgeous at this time of year with all of the flowers at full bloom.
You may hear some traffic noise in the Shakespeare Garden from one of the roads that runs through the park, underneath the garden. The maximum guests allowed for an event permit issued for a wedding here is 25 people, although I would say that it’s more appropriate for groups of under fifteen.
